Philippines reiterates commitment to ASEAN economic integration, prepares for 2026 Chairship

At the recent Third Meeting of the ASEAN Senior Economic Officials (SEOM 3/56), the Philippines reaffirmed its dedication to strengthening economic integration across the ASEAN region. The meeting, held in preparation for the 56th ASEAN Economic Ministers’ Meeting, served as a platform for member states to align on key initiatives and shared priorities.

Led by Director Sherylyn Aquia of the Department of Trade and Industry–Bureau of International Trade Relations (DTI-BITR), the Philippine delegation emphasized the importance of ensuring that the region’s integration remains inclusive, sustainable, and forward-looking. This approach is crucial for enabling ASEAN to effectively tackle global challenges while creating new opportunities for businesses and communities.

Looking Ahead to 2026

With the Philippines set to assume the ASEAN Chairship in 2026, Director Aquia highlighted the country’s readiness to lead the SEOM process and build on the region’s progress. The Philippines is committed to steering initiatives that will foster innovation, sustainability, and long-term resilience across ASEAN.

Advancing Regional Priorities

The meeting included active discussions on advancing regional economic integration and supporting the priorities under Malaysia’s 2025 ASEAN Chairship. Progress was reviewed on Malaysia’s Priority Economic Deliverables, including the significant conclusion of the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA).

Participants also delved into key regional initiatives under the ASEAN Economic Community, with a focus on enhancing sustainability and reinforcing supply chain resilience. The Philippines’ participation underscores its active role in shaping a more cohesive and prosperous economic future for the entire ASEAN community.
