The UK’s Minister of State for Defence, Lord Vernon Coaker, announced a significant step to deepen the UK-Philippine defence relationship, confirming that formal discussions for a Status of Visiting Forces Agreement (SOVFA) will commence. The announcement was made during his visit to Manila and aboard the HMS Richmond, underscoring the UK’s unwavering commitment to a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Indo-Pacific.
The proposed agreement would be a landmark achievement, paving the way for a wide array of new joint military activities, including increased naval and army exercises. This development reflects a shared understanding that the security of the Euro-Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific is inextricably linked.
During his visit, Lord Coaker met with key Philippine defence officials and emphasised the importance of collaboration in an era of evolving global threats. The visit also provided a platform to showcase cutting-edge British defence innovation. On board the HMS Richmond, Lord Coaker hosted a defence industry day to promote UK exports and highlight the role of defence as a key engine for growth.
“The UK’s relationship with the Philippines is strong and continues to flourish,” said Lord Coaker. “Together we can help shape a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Indo-Pacific.” He added, “It has been a privilege to see cutting-edge defence innovation from both the UK and the Philippines. Together, we will enhance our defence cooperation, boost jobs and trade, and make defence an engine for growth in the UK.”
The UK’s commitment to the region is further demonstrated by the ongoing deployment of the UK Carrier Strike Group, which is engaging with 30 countries across its eight-month journey. Additionally, the UK will participate in Exercise SAMA SAMA for the fourth time later this year, sending experts to support capacity-building efforts.
