In a heartfelt ceremony celebrating World Tourism Month, the Department of Tourism (DOT), under the leadership of Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco, paid tribute to the dedicated “kutseros” (horse-drawn carriage drivers) of Intramuros and Luneta. The thanksgiving program, held on Wednesday, September 24, at the Centro de Tourism in Intramuros, recognized these frontliners for their vital role in preserving and promoting the country’s rich cultural heritage.
The “kalesa,” the traditional Filipino carriage they operate, has long been a powerful symbol of Philippine history. The DOT highlighted the significant cultural value these frontliners bring to the tourism industry, emphasizing their contributions to shaping and sustaining the tourism landscape.
“Our kutseros are more than just drivers; they are storytellers and custodians of our history,” said Secretary Frasco. “Their hard work and dedication in sharing our heritage with authenticity and pride are invaluable to the Philippine tourism experience.”
To support the kutseros in their daily work, Secretary Frasco personally distributed a variety of essential items, including new uniforms, shoes, and a “tour guiding kit” containing a fedora hat, sunglasses, sunblock, an electronic lapel, a tumbler, and a journal with a pen. In a personal gesture of gratitude, she also provided cash assistance and personal accident insurance from her own funds.
This initiative underscores the DOT’s commitment to recognizing and supporting the tourism frontliners who are integral to showcasing the Philippines’ unique identity to the world.
