PPA prioritizes   relief efforts, braces for tropical storm Paolo

The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) assured the public that the agency prioritizes the movement of relief goods transported via ports while also preparing for the possible impact of Tropical Storm Paolo.

Port operations continue smoothly to guarantee the delivery of essential supplies, relief cargo, and humanitarian assistance to quake affected communities following the 6.9-magnitude earthquake in Cebu. With all major ports remaining safe and fully operational with no confirmed major damage to port facilities.

In line with President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s directive to ensure public safety and disaster readiness, PPA General Manager Jay Santiago emphasized that ports serve as lifelines during times of crisis, providing critical support not only for trade and travel but also for relief and recovery.

“In line with this, PPA has activated its typhoon contingency measures in anticipation of Tropical Storm Paolo. All Port Management Offices (PMO) have been instructed to secure port facilities and equipment, coordinate closely with the Philippine Coast Guard to ensure vessel safety, and maintain round-the-clock monitoring of weather advisories. Cargo shipments carrying relief goods and essential supplies are being given priority to avoid delays should sea conditions worsen.”

Since 2018, PPA has been guided by its Public Service Continuity Plan (PSCP), a comprehensive framework to ensure uninterrupted port services during emergencies such as earthquakes, typhoons, and other calamities. The plan focuses on rapid restoration of operations, prioritization of relief cargo, strict implementation of safety protocols, and protection of passengers and port workers.

To reinforce disaster preparedness, PPA also conducts quarterly nationwide earthquake and emergency drills for all employees, ensuring that port personnel across the country are fully equipped to respond effectively in any crisis since ports serve as vital gateways for relief and recovery during disasters such as the recent earthquake and the incoming Tropical Storm Paolo.
