MMDA throws full support behind Philippines’ first locally-developed electric ferry, “M/B Dalaray”

The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has affirmed its strong commitment to a greener future for transportation by expressing full support for the Philippines’ first locally-developed, battery-electric passenger ferry, which was officially inaugurated by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) at Plaza Mexico, Escolta, Manila.

The pioneering vessel, nicknamed M/B Dalaray, represents a significant leap forward in sustainable mobility for the nation’s capital.

In a message delivered at the inauguration, MMDA Deputy Chairman Usec. Frisco San Juan Jr. extended his congratulations to DOST Philippines and hailed the new electric ferry as a major step toward cleaner, sustainable transportation.

“This electric passenger ferry is a big step towards cleaner and sustainable transportation that aims to provide an environmentally friendly alternative and will help ease traffic in Metro Manila,” said Usec. San Juan Jr. He emphasized that the project promotes sustainable maritime transport in the Philippines by utilizing innovative technology for the benefit of both the public and the environment.

The M/B Dalaray has a capacity of 40 passengers and is expected to be officially integrated into the MMDA Pasig River Ferry Service (PRFS) fleet starting in November. As an electric-powered vessel, it is anticipated to be more economical to operate than conventional ferries, translating to sustainable savings and operational efficiency.

The MMDA is looking forward to the ferry’s deployment, especially as the “ber-months” kick in. With the approaching Christmas season, the agency expects an increase in patrons utilizing the PRFS for convenient, traffic-free travel across the city.

Lew Andrew Tria, EEE Institute Director and Project Director of the E-Ferry Project, publicly thanked the MMDA for its vital support. “The MMDA is one of DOST’s indispensable partners for the successful deployment of this groundbreaking technology in the Pasig River,” Tria stated, highlighting the critical role of inter-agency cooperation in bringing this sustainable vision to life.

The launch of the M/B Dalaray signals a new era for public transport in Metro Manila, underscoring the government’s commitment to tackling traffic congestion and climate change through homegrown innovation.
