MRT-3 rolls out 4-car trains on weekends, maximizing capacity and passenger convenience

The Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) has officially begun the deployment of three 4-car train sets on weekends, starting on Saturday, October 18, as part of a sustained effort to improve passenger service and maximize rail line capacity across all days of the week.

This weekend rollout follows the highly successful deployment of six 4-car trains on Friday, October 17 peak hours, fulfilling the operational directive issued by Department of Transportation (DOTr) Acting Secretary Giovanni Lopez.

The transition from the standard 3-car configuration to the enhanced 4-car setup is a critical measure aimed at addressing passenger congestion. Each 4-car train significantly increases the line’s per-trip capacity, directly leading to a faster movement of passengers along the line, shorter queue times, and a substantial reduction in passenger buildup across all MRT-3 stations.

“This is about sustained commitment to the Filipino commuter,” said DOTr Acting Secretary Giovanni Lopez. “The success of our weekday capacity expansion clearly demonstrated the immediate need for more space and shorter waiting times. By extending the 4-car deployment to weekends, we are ensuring that convenience and efficiency are not just rush-hour privileges but a standard of service that our riding public deserves every day.”

The DOTr and the MRT-3 management will continue to monitor the operational performance of the expanded fleet throughout the weekend to ensure seamless integration and reliable service delivery. The additional trains are expected to drastically improve the riding experience for those traveling for leisure, essential tasks, or work during non-peak days.
