President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. launched the next phase of the comprehensive Pasig River Urban Development Project, announcing major initiatives focused on sustainable mobility, advanced environmental cleanup technology, and the revitalization of historic Manila landmarks.
Speaking at the launch of the Pasig Bigyang Buhay Muli (PBBM) Pasig River Urban Development Project Phase 4 at the Metropolitan Theater, President Marcos emphasized the government’s commitment to integrating ecological restoration with sustainable urban living.
“As we continue to bring life back to the Pasig River, we are also offering new ways to travel more sustainably,” the President stated. “This is part of a larger vision to create a culturally rich urban environment where history, nature, and modern living come together.”
Clean Mobility and Advanced Cleanup Technology
A cornerstone of the sustainability push is the deployment of the M/B Dalaray, the Philippines’ first locally designed and fabricated electric ferry, developed by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). Capable of sailing the Pasig River for up to three hours straight, the electric ferry is a clear step toward clean mobility and reduced emissions, with full operations expected to commence by November of this year.
Furthermore, the government is leveraging advanced technology for environmental restoration. President Marcos cited the pilot initiative utilizing the ClearBot, a solar-powered, AI-enabled robotic vessel designed to autonomously collect floating trash and invasive plants from the river and its connecting esteros. This efficient and environmentally friendly cleanup effort is being explored in partnership with the Asian Development Bank and Clear Robotics.
Revitalizing Historic Manila
Complementing the river restoration, the President also announced key urban transformation projects in Manila following a meeting with Mayor Francisco Domagoso.
The planned projects include:
- Intramuros Golf Course Conversion: Converting the historic golf course into a much-needed Open Green Space in the heart of the city, aimed at providing breathing room while preserving Intramuros’ historic charm.
- Plaza Calderon Rehabilitation: A comprehensive rehabilitation of Plaza Calderon, a significant cultural and historical landmark located steps away from the river.
- Lawton Underpass Enhancement: Upgrading the Lawton Underpass to significantly improve pedestrian access to the Pasig River Esplanade and the entire riverside stretch, enhancing walkability across the area.
President Marcos concluded by underscoring the spirit of cooperation driving these monumental changes. “This is yet another proof that when the national government, private sector, Local Government Units, and the communities collaborate and work as one, great and game-changing things will happen.”
