President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. today reaffirmed the Philippines’ readiness to assume the chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2026, outlining a focused agenda centered on delivering tangible benefits to the region’s populace. The announcement was made during the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur.
In his address to regional leaders, President Marcos emphasized that the Philippine chairmanship will prioritize “practical, inclusive, and measurable initiatives” designed to directly improve the lives and opportunities of the people across all member states. This approach underscores the commitment to translating high-level policy into on-the-ground progress and development.
The President highlighted ASEAN’s indispensable role in promoting regional stability, robust cooperation, and collective progress. He reiterated the country’s firm adherence to key regional and global governance frameworks, including the ASEAN Vision 2045, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement, and the fundamental principle of ASEAN Centrality.
Concluding his remarks, President Marcos extended his profound gratitude to the Government of Malaysia for its warm hospitality during the Summit. He also officially welcomed Timor-Leste as the newest member state of ASEAN, signaling support for the organization’s expansion and deepening regional solidarity.
