Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez ordered immediate improvements to the Batangas City Grand Terminal (BCGT) today, following a stern inspection that revealed inadequate facilities for passengers, particularly persons with disabilities (PWDs) and senior citizens.
The inspection of both the Batangas Port and the Batangas City Grand Terminal was conducted in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to ensure the safety and security of passengers flocking to transportation hubs for the upcoming Undas holiday travel.
During the visit to the BCGT, a key land-based terminal connecting Metro Manila, Southern Luzon provinces, and the Batangas Port, Acting Secretary Lopez criticized the management for failing to meet basic standards for passenger convenience.
“We have standards, especially for the convenience of passengers. There are not enough chairs, and the existing ones are uncomfortable. Where will the PWDs sit? Must they wait on the bus?” Acting Secretary Lopez asked terminal officials. “PWDs, senior citizens who want to rest in the waiting area should always have an option. It’s hot. Let’s fix this.”
Acting Secretary Lopez immediately mandated the management of the Batangas City Grand Terminal to install additional, comfortable chairs and electric fans in the arrival and waiting areas to mitigate the heat and ensure a comfortable waiting experience.
In addition to terminal comfort, the inspection also covered critical safety elements, including bus tires and the availability of working fire extinguishers.
The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) confirmed it will closely monitor the Batangas City Grand Terminal’s compliance with all established bus terminal operating standards. The terminal operator has since committed to following the Acting Secretary’s order to promptly make the necessary facilities more accommodating for travelers.
As the major hub serving provinces like Cavite, Laguna, Lucena, and the Mindoro islands via the Batangas City Port, the rapid improvement of the BCGT facilities is crucial for the safe and comfortable movement of hundreds of thousands of commuters expected during the Undas observance.
