President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. successfully concluded his three-day participation in the 47th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and Related Summits, marked by a symbolic handover of leadership and a major economic agreement.
During the closing ceremony held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center, President Marcos Jr. officially received the ASEAN Chairship gavel from Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. This formal act signifies the beginning of the Philippines’ highly anticipated hosting of ASEAN in 2026, where the country will steer the regional agenda towards deeper cooperation, economic resilience, and sustainable development.
A key highlight of the Summit’s conclusion was the ceremonial signing of the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area (ACFTA) 3.0 Upgrade Protocol, which President Marcos Jr. witnessed alongside other ASEAN Leaders and Chinese Premier His Excellency Li Qiang.
The ACFTA 3.0 Upgrade is a significant milestone that builds on over two decades of mutually beneficial partnership. It is designed to expand cooperation into new and emerging areas crucial for future growth, including:
- Digital and Green Economies: Promoting sustainable economic practices and digital transformation.
- Supply Chain Resilience: Enhancing stability and connectivity across regional trade networks.
- Support for MSMEs: Bolstering micro, small, and medium enterprises through improved access and protection.
The Philippines, through DTI Secretary Ma. Cristina A. Roque, signed the crucial agreement earlier in the week, demonstrating the nation’s commitment to regional economic deepening.
Throughout the high-level meetings and bilateral talks, President Marcos Jr. consistently reaffirmed the country’s unwavering commitment to advancing the region’s shared goals and promoting a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Southeast Asia. The conclusion of the 47th Summit signifies the end of a series of productive discussions among ASEAN Leaders and Dialogue Partners on regional cooperation, economic partnerships, and sustainable development.
