The Philippine Embassy in Egypt issued a crucial public advisory, urging all Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) currently in or intending to travel to Egypt for employment to be highly vigilant against illegal and deceptive “third-country” recruitment schemes.
These schemes typically involve recruiters offering employment in a different country, but the actual, unauthorized work placement is ultimately in Egypt—often without the proper legal documentation, accreditation, or valid employment contracts. Engaging in such unauthorized employment puts Filipino nationals at serious risk of exploitation, detention, or deportation.
Advisories for Aspiring and Current OFWs:
The Embassy strictly advises Filipinos to follow established legal pathways to protect their welfare:
- Use DMW-Accredited Agencies Only: Apply for jobs solely through agencies accredited by the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW).
- Verify Documentation and Contracts: Do not accept job offers or sign employment contracts unless they are officially accompanied by legal work permits, necessary visas, and valid employer documentation. All contracts must comply with DMW-mandated terms, conditions, and the minimum required salary.
- Report Suspicious Activity: Be cautious of recruiters promising easy, rapid placements or work in Egypt without proper government permits. Immediately report any suspicious recruitment activity or offers claiming to provide jobs in Egypt without official government authorization to the Philippine Embassy or the DMW.
Compliance with Egyptian Labor Laws:
The Embassy also joins relevant Egyptian authorities in reminding all Filipinos residing and working in Egypt of mandatory requirements under local law:
- Valid Work Permits are Required: All foreign workers must obtain valid work permits and licenses from the Egyptian Ministry of Manpower and its affiliated offices.
- Always Carry Identification: Workers must always have valid identification, including their passports and residence cards, while circulating throughout the country.
- Passport Custody is Non-Negotiable: The Philippine passport is the property of the Philippine Government. Your employer and/or sponsor must not keep your passport for any reason. It must remain in your possession at all times and be available when required by authorities or the Embassy.
The Philippine Embassy remains committed to assisting its nationals and ensuring their rights and welfare are protected.
