The Port Management Office (PMO) Panay/Guimaras of the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) has activated its full storm shelter protocol as Typhoon Tino approaches the Visayas region, threatening to bring severe weather and up to Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 4 to the province.
In a proactive measure to ensure maritime safety, various types of vessels, ranging from small fishing boats to large commercial ships, commenced sheltering operations and flocked to the Port of Iloilo throughout the morning of November 3. The move follows the latest advisory from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), which indicates Iloilo is highly likely to be placed under TCWS No. 4.
Typhoon Tino is expected to bring extreme weather conditions, including sustained high winds and rainfall accumulations of up to 200 millimeters within a critical 24-hour period.
“The immediate response from the maritime community is a testament to the effectiveness of our disaster protocols,” stated a spokesperson for PPA PMO Panay/Guimaras. “The Port of Iloilo remains one of the country’s most reliable natural harbors. Its strategic location within Panay Gulf, protected by the natural barrier of Guimaras Island, significantly mitigates the impact of strong waves and winds, making it the safest haven during severe weather.”
To manage the influx of vessels and maintain order, PPA PMO Panay/Guimaras personnel are deployed on a 24-hour standby rotation. Their primary directive is to ensure the safe and orderly mooring of all incoming ships and to monitor the security of port operations and passenger facilities. While vessel movements are currently focused only on sheltering, all non-essential activities, including passenger vessel departures, have been temporarily suspended until the all-clear signal is issued by PAGASA.
The PPA assures the public and all stakeholders that safety remains the paramount concern. All contingency plans are fully operational to minimize risks to life, property, and port infrastructure.
