DOTR Secretary lauds PCG as pillars of national security and disaster response

Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez today issued a strong commendation for the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), emphasizing their critical role as a frontline defense force and a key component of the nation’s disaster management apparatus.

Secretary Lopez’s remarks align with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive for an immediate and proactive response to communities affected by calamities.

“We are deeply grateful to the brave personnel of the Philippine Coast Guard,” Acting Secretary Lopez stated. “We have many compatriots who are helped and lives are saved in the midst of calamities. Now that there is a strong Typhoon Tino, the PCG has immediately mobilized for critical relief operations and the evacuation of residents in affected areas across the Visayas and Mindanao.”

Beyond their humanitarian work, the Acting Secretary recognized the PCG’s indispensable service in monitoring and defending the country’s maritime domain.

“The PCG is also closely monitoring the country’s sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea. Their loyalty and love for our country cannot be underestimated,” Secretary Lopez said. He cited the personnel’s courage in the face of escalating territorial challenges. “You can see, the PCG does not move even when they are being hit with water cannons in the West Philippine Sea just to protect the country’s territory.”

The Acting Transport Chief also recognized the comprehensive scope of the PCG’s duties, which extend beyond maritime disasters and security, noting their quick response to earthquakes and oil spills.

Furthermore, PCG personnel play an active role in maintaining security and order across the entire transportation network during major national holidays.

“The PCG is not just at sea because they also help in terminals, airports, seaports and even on the roads to ensure the security of passengers and motorists,” Lopez added, citing their success during the recent Undas season and their preparations for the upcoming Christmas holidays.

Acting Secretary Lopez concluded by reiterating the immense contribution of the Coast Guard to Philippine society, stating, “In general, the PCG’s contribution to society is immense and they deserve to be supported and recognized for their loyal service to our country.”
