The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) announced a major push for the proposed Shipbuilding and Ship Repair (SBSR) Development Bill, championing it as a transformative initiative expected to generate up to 100,000 local jobs and significantly bolster the Philippines’ position in the global maritime sector.
Dubbed the “No Need To Go Abroad” initiative, the SBSR Bill is designed to create stronger support systems for the domestic shipbuilding industry, keeping highly skilled Filipino workers employed in the country and strengthening local economies, starting with hubs like Bataan.
“This bill is more than just about making ships; it’s about making opportunities and demonstrating national capability,” said a MARINA representative. “We want every Filipino maritime worker to know that there is a strong future for them right here at home. This is an opportunity to prove that Filipino expertise can collaborate globally while building locally.”
Local industry leaders have voiced their support, highlighting the quality of domestic production. Carlo Ignacio, Vice President for Operations of Seafront Shipyard in Mariveles, Bataan, stated, “We believe that if other countries can do it, we can do it too. Our workers take immense pride in delivering quality, Filipino-made shipbuilding and ship repair services.”
The enactment of the SBSR Development Bill is seen as a crucial step toward realizing the vision of a self-sufficient and competitive local shipbuilding industry, turning the tide on overseas employment dependence and fostering a new era of maritime national pride.
