Jetstar Airways makes history: Inaugural direct flight connects Brisbane and Cebu

The Philippines and Australia celebrated a landmark moment in bilateral relations and tourism as Jetstar Airways completed its inaugural direct, nonstop flight from Brisbane, Australia (BNE), to Mactan-Cebu International Airport. This historic flight officially establishes the first-ever direct air link between Cebu and any Australian city, promising to significantly boost travel, trade, and cultural exchange between the two vibrant destinations.

The flight, carrying a full load of passengers eager to explore Central Visayas, touched down at MCIA at approximately 5:00 PM (PST) on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2025, to a traditional water cannon salute and a warm reception.

The launch of this new route, operating three times weekly, marks a pivotal achievement for MCIA and the Department of Tourism (DOT) in expanding international connectivity. For travelers from Australia, this direct access eliminates the need for connecting flights, positioning Cebu as a premier, easily accessible gateway to the Philippines’ world-renowned beaches, islands, and rich cultural heritage.

“The new route strengthens the bonds between our nations, allowing Cebuanos to explore Brisbane’s dynamic urban landscape, cultural scene, and the stunning Gold Coast, while offering Australians direct access to the warm Filipino hospitality and the globally recognized beauty of Cebu and its surrounding islands,” said a spokesperson for MCIA.

A distinguished delegation of government officials and aviation executives gathered at MCIA to welcome the inaugural flight, underscoring the route’s strategic importance:

His Excellency Marc Innes-Brown, Australian Ambassador to the Philippines

Assistant Secretary Judilyn Quiachon, Department of Tourism (DOT)

Mr. Mark Souter, Chief Airline Marketing Officer, Aboitiz InfraCapital (ACAC)

Mr. Ted Knight, Vice President for Network, Fleet and Planning, Jetstar Airways

Mr. Julius Neri Jr., General Manager and CEO, MCIA Authority

Mr. Gary Lao, Tourism Officer, Lapu-Lapu City

Mr. Ted Knight of Jetstar Airways commented, “We are thrilled to be the airline making history by directly connecting Brisbane and Cebu. This route reflects our commitment to offering great value and new travel opportunities to our customers. We anticipate strong demand from both sides, supporting local tourism economies in both Queensland and the Central Visayas region.”
