MARINA partners with World Maritime University to launch global digital skills survey for Filipino seafarers

The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) is calling upon all Filipino seafarers to participate in a landmark study aimed at defining the future of maritime labor.

In collaboration with the World Maritime University (WMU) and the Lloyd’s Register Foundation, MARINA has launched a comprehensive survey to gather first-hand perspectives on digital skills, training, and the evolving technological landscape of the shipping industry.

As the “Seafaring Capital of the World,” the Philippines plays a critical role in global trade. This initiative seeks to ensure that Filipino maritime professionals remain at the forefront of the industry’s digital transformation.

The maritime sector is undergoing a rapid transition toward automation, electronic navigation, and smart ship technologies. To support this shift, the WMU-led study focuses on three key pillars:

Identifying Gaps: Pinpointing specific areas where current training may not meet modern technological demands.

Overcoming Challenges: Understanding the barriers seafarers face when adopting new digital tools.

Unlocking Opportunities: Shaping international policy and educational curricula to better prepare the workforce for “Industry 4.0.”

“The insights provided by our seafarers are not just data points; they are the blueprint for future maritime education,” says a MARINA representative. “By participating, our seafarers ensure that the Filipino voice is heard in the halls of global maritime policy-making.”

The survey is designed to be accessible and secure, ensuring that every participant can provide honest feedback without reservation.

Confidentiality: All responses are strictly confidential and anonymous. Data will be used solely for research purposes to improve industry practices.

Time Commitment: The survey takes approximately 15 minutes to complete.

Eligibility: Open to all Filipino seafarers, regardless of rank or current employment status (shipboard or shore-based).

Seafarers are encouraged to submit their responses as soon as possible. The portal will remain open until 10 January 2026.

MARINA views this collaboration as a vital step in maintaining the competitive edge of the Filipino seafarer. The results of this study will be instrumental in developing localized training programs and ensuring that the Philippines continues to lead in the global maritime arena.
