Demonstrating a steadfast commitment to the welfare of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has officially approved the allocation of emergency funds to ensure the immediate, door-to-door delivery of abandoned balikbayan boxes currently stalled at ports.
The directive comes as a response to the Bureau of Customs’ (BOC) request for national government intervention. Despite the rising number of cases involving deceptive and irresponsible freight forwarders who have abandoned shipments, the President has ordered a “whole-of-government approach” to ensure these hard-earned gifts reach their intended recipients without further delay.
Direct Home Delivery: OFWs and their families are no longer required to visit BOC offices or ports. The government will handle the logistics to deliver boxes directly to their doorsteps.
Government-Funded Logistics: The allocated funds will cover all processing, handling, and shipping fees, removing the financial burden caused by the original forwarders’ negligence.
Holiday Deadline: The BOC, in coordination with relevant agencies, is working under a strict timeline to complete deliveries before the end of the holiday season.
Accountability: While the government facilitates the release of these boxes, it continues to monitor and take action against unscrupulous forwarders who have victimized Filipinos abroad.
“This move reflects the President’s deep concern for our OFWs. We recognize that these boxes are the fruits of their sacrifice, and the government is committed to ensuring that not a single box is left behind due to the malpractice of private entities,” the BOC stated.
The Bureau is currently finalizing logistics and payment schedules to expedite the release of the remaining shipments. This initiative serves as a bridge to resolve the immediate backlog while the administration strengthens regulations to prevent future abandonment cases.
