The Department of Tourism (DOT) took a significant step toward making the Philippines a global leader in sustainable travel by hosting the National Ecotourism Forum 2025 on Thursday, December 18, at the 1898 Hotel.
The forum brought together national agencies, private sector partners, and sustainability experts to align local tourism efforts with international benchmarks. The initiative aims to transform Philippine ecotourism destinations into globally competitive, community-centered, and ecologically resilient hubs.
Central to the forum were deep dives into major international frameworks designed to protect natural resources while boosting local economies. Key topics included:
ASEAN Ecotourism Standards and GSTC Destination Criteria.
Green Fins for world-class marine tourism management.
Regenerative Tourism approaches that go beyond “doing no harm” to actively restoring ecosystems.
UN Tourism’s International Network of Sustainable Observatories (INSTO) for data-driven monitoring.
These frameworks serve as a roadmap for local government units (LGUs) to strengthen governance, prepare for global certifications, and reduce ecological pressure on sensitive areas.
Speaking on behalf of Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco, Undersecretary Verna Buensuceso delivered a clear message: sustainability is a survival strategy.
“Sustainability is no longer aspirational. It’s actually operational,” said Undersecretary Buensuceso. “It can be measured, it can be managed, and it’s something that has to be part of our day-to-day lives. We need to do this with commitment and coordination.”
Buensuceso emphasized that recent climate-related disasters have underscored the urgency of these standards, noting that resilience is essential for the protection of ecosystems, local communities, and the livelihoods of tourism workers.
The forum featured a powerhouse lineup of speakers, including:
OIC-Director Atty. Glenn Albert Ocampo and Grick Cordero (DENR-Biodiversity Management Bureau).
Industry experts Susan Santos de Cardenas, Marissa Victoria Claustro, Barbara Kitane, Patice Talaue, and Professor Edieser Dela Santa.
The event was also attended by senior DOT leadership, including Undersecretaries Myra Paz Valderrosa-Abubakar and Maria Rica Bueno, and Assistant Secretary Judilyn Quiachon, alongside Regional Directors from across the archipelago.
By unifying these diverse stakeholders, the DOT reaffirms its commitment to a “Green Philippines,” ensuring that the country’s natural beauty remains a source of pride and prosperity for generations to come.
