BI modernizes border security with 78 new E-Gates at NAIA as President Marcos Jr. leads unveiling

Bureau of Immigration (BI) Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado officially recognized the successful partnership between the government and the New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC) following the installation of 78 state-of-the-art electronic gates (e-gates) at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

The modernization project was formally unveiled on December 16 in a ceremony led by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., marking a significant milestone in the administration’s push to digitize government services and strengthen national border security.

The new e-gates are designed to streamline the immigration process, reducing manual intervention and wait times for travelers. Commissioner Viado emphasized that this technology allows immigration officers to shift their focus from routine processing to high-level security assessments and enforcement.

“This initiative sends a strong message that under the President’s leadership, the government is serious about transforming our airports,” said Viado. “These e-gates will significantly improve passenger flow and ensure our frontline services are fast, reliable, and globally competitive.”

A total of 78 e-gates have been strategically deployed across NAIA’s busiest hubs to manage both departing and arriving traffic:

Location Departure Area Arrival Area Total
NAIA Terminal 1 6 E-Gates 12 E-Gates 18
NAIA Terminal 3 18 (Main) + 12 (OFW) 12 E-Gates 42
Total 78

The procurement of these e-gates aligns with the national government’s broader governance agenda to adopt digital solutions and reduce congestion at major ports of entry. By partnering with the NNIC, the Bureau of Immigration is working toward a long-term vision of a modernized NAIA that meets international aviation and security standards.

Commissioner Viado concluded by reaffirming the Bureau’s commitment to the President’s directive for a more responsive and efficient government. The BI plans to continue implementing technology-driven reforms to ensure the Philippines remains a welcoming yet secure destination for all travelers.
