The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced today that the dedicated inner busway lanes along EDSA, covering the northbound and southbound sections from Roxas Boulevard to Orense, have officially returned to normal operations. The reopening follows the successful completion of the asphalt overlay project, a key component of the ongoing EDSA Rehabilitation Project.
The repair works were finished within the original timeline, fulfilling President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to fast-track infrastructure improvements. The timing ensures that thousands of commuters returning to work and school this Monday, January 5, experience faster and more comfortable travel.
Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez expressed his gratitude to Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon for the swift execution of the project. “Nagpapasalamat tayo sa DPWH sa pamumuno ni Sec. Dizon dahil mabilis nilang natapos itong rehabilitation works sa busway lane. Saktong-sakto kasi back to school at back to work na karamihan ng mga pasahero, kaya tuloy-tuloy na ‘yung mabilis at mas convenient nilang biyahe gamit ‘yung busway,” Secretary Lopez said.
Following the completion of the overlay, passengers and drivers reported immediate improvements in ride quality and reduced travel times. The rehabilitation is part of a broader commitment to provide a safer, more convenient, and efficient commuting experience for the public.
Secretary Lopez reiterated that the inner busway remains strictly exclusive to authorized passenger buses. To maintain the efficiency of the lane, the DOTr and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will strictly penalize violators.
-
Strict Monitoring: Personnel from the Special Action and Intelligence Committee for Transportation (SAICT) are deployed to apprehend unauthorized private vehicles.
-
Technology-Driven Enforcement: The MMDA continues to implement the No Contact Apprehension Policy to monitor the busway 24/7.
“Bawal pong dumaan ang private vehicles sa EDSA busway. ‘Yan po ang paulit-ulit nating paalala,” Secretary Lopez stressed.
To ensure a seamless transition, officials from the DOTr, DPWH, and MMDA—including MMDA General Manager Nicolas Torre III—inspected busway stations yesterday. MMDA Chairman Atty. Don Artes is coordinating closely with Secretaries Lopez and Dizon, with the goal of completing the full EDSA Rehabilitation within the coming months.
Commuters and motorists are advised that while the busway is fully operational, repair works for other sections of EDSA will continue on a limited schedule from 10:00 PM to 4:00 AM daily to minimize traffic disruption.
