The Philippines, under its 2026 ASEAN Chairship, is set to host the ASEAN Special Senior Officials Meeting on Energy (SOME) and its Associated Meetings in the province of Bohol from January 20 to 22, 2026. This gathering marks a critical step in reinforcing regional energy security and accelerating the transition toward sustainable power across Southeast Asia.
The summit brings together energy senior officials and governing council members from across the 10-member bloc. The primary focus is to synchronize technical initiatives and review work programs to ensure that regional cooperation remains agile and responsive to global energy shifts.
A cornerstone of the Bohol meetings is the preparation for the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) 2026–2030. This five-year blueprint serves as the region’s strategic roadmap, focusing on seven key program areas:
-
ASEAN Power Grid and Oil and Gas Connectivity
-
Renewable Energy Integration
-
Energy Efficiency and Conservation
-
Clean Coal Technology and Civilian Nuclear Energy
-
Regional Energy Policy and Planning
“The Philippines is advancing an energy agenda that delivers security, inclusive economic growth, innovation, and resilience,” said Undersecretary Felix William B. Fuentebella, the Philippine Senior Official on Energy Leader. “Through these technical discussions, we are turning shared commitments into practical action.”
In a move to demonstrate the practical application of sustainable technology, the Department of Energy (DOE) has partnered with ACMobility to provide electric vehicles (EVs) for the duration of the summit. This initiative highlights the Philippines’ commitment to expanding EV adoption and testing the reliability of charging infrastructure in real-world conditions.
Beyond internal ASEAN coordination, officials are expected to deepen strategic cooperation with ASEAN Dialogue Partners. These international alliances are vital for fortifying regional resilience, specifically in developing coordinated responses to global energy supply disruptions.
The DOE is working in close coordination with the National Organizing Council, the Provincial Government of Bohol, and the Municipality of Panglao to ensure the successful execution of these high-level talks.
“As chair, the Philippines is committed to ensuring our collective efforts deliver tangible benefits—from powering homes to supporting inclusive growth for all ASEAN peoples,” Undersecretary Fuentebella added.
