In a landmark move for inclusive travel, the Department of Tourism (DOT) officially conferred the Muslim-Friendly Accommodation Establishment (MFAE) recognition upon Robinsons Hotels and Resorts (RHR) during a ceremonial awarding held Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at the DOT Multipurpose Hall.
The recognition highlights the successful certification of 21 RHR properties nationwide, making it a leader in culturally responsive tourism in the Philippines.
Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco, who served as the Guest of Honor, emphasized that the initiative is a core component of the Marcos Administration’s strategy to expand the country’s global market reach.
“The ethos of our governance seeks to ensure that we develop tourism in a manner that excludes no one,” Secretary Frasco stated. “Whether that is in the provision of millions of jobs or providing a world-class welcome to people of various faiths—including the Muslim faith—we are committed to an inclusive tourism industry.”
The 21 recognized properties met the rigorous requirements of DOT Memorandum Circular No. 2024-003. Following months of inspections and specialized staff training, these hotels now provide:
-
Dedicated Prayer Spaces: Accessible areas for worship within the premises.
-
Ablution Facilities: Proper installations for ritual cleansing.
-
Halal-Certified Dining: A range of Muslim-friendly food and beverage options.
-
Cultural Sensitivity: Staff trained in Muslim-friendly service standards to ensure comfort and respect for all guests.
This milestone is the result of a strategic partnership initiated at the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai in April 2025. Through a Memorandum of Understanding, the DOT and RHR committed to transforming the group’s signature and partner properties into MFAEs, positioning the Philippines as a premier destination for the multi-billion dollar global Muslim travel market.
The ceremony featured opening remarks from Undersecretary Myra Paz Abubakar of the DOT Halal Tourism and Muslim Concerns office, who oversaw the certification process. Barun Jolly, Senior Vice President of RHR, expressed his gratitude, noting that the recognition reinforces RHR’s commitment to hospitality excellence and diversity.
