The Maritime Industry M/V Karkar, a Filipino-built Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro-Ro) passenger vessel, is set for export to Papua New Guinea.
The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) cited the accomplishment during the vessel’s blessing ceremony on 29 January 2026 in Polambato, Bogo City, Cebu.
Led by Regional Director Engr. Ronaldo P. Bandalaria, the MARINA Regional Office VII (MRO 7) recognized the vessel as a concrete outcome of the growing capability of the Philippine Shipbuilding and Ship Repair (SBSR) industry.
Built by Junida Shipyard for Sarangani Engineering Works, M/V Karkar has a gross tonnage of 497 and a passenger capacity of 317.
The vessel is set for export to Papua New Guinea, marking another milestone for locally constructed ships entering the international market.
The successful construction and export of M/V Karkar highlight the ability of Filipino shipbuilders to design and build seaworthy vessels that comply with international maritime safety and quality standards.
This achievement contributes to job generation, skills development, and increased global confidence in Philippine-built vessels—key factors in strengthening the country’s SBSR sector. In his message, Engr. Bandalaria underscored the importance of strict compliance with maritime safety regulations, particularly for vessels operating overseas.
He reaffirmed MARINA’s commitment to supporting shipbuilders and shipowners through policies that promote safety, quality, and innovation, in line with the Authority’s thrust to advance a globally competitive maritime industry.
