PH bolsters maritime governance: Key agencies convene for post-IMO audit validation workshop

Demonstrating a steadfast commitment to global maritime excellence, key Philippine maritime agencies successfully concluded a high-level two-day Inter-Agency Workshop on the Verification and Evaluation of Corrective Action Plans (CAP) for the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Member State Audit Scheme (IMSAS).

The workshop, held from 10 to 11 February 2026, serves as a critical milestone in the Philippines’ roadmap toward full compliance with international standards following its mandatory IMSAS audit in October 2023.

Organized by the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) through its Overseas Shipping Service (OSS), the workshop focused on assessing progress and validating the implementation of corrective measures across the sector.

In her welcome remarks, Ms. Nenita S. Atienza, Deputy Administrator for Planning at MARINA, emphasized that maintaining an international standing requires seamless inter-agency synergy. “This workshop marks the continuation of the collective work that began after the 2023 IMSAS audit. Together, we have developed corrective action plans and implemented concrete measures aligned with IMO instruments and international maritime standards,” Ms. Atienza stated.

Since the 2023 audit, the Philippine government has undertaken comprehensive reforms to reinforce the integrity and sustainability of its maritime framework. The workshop gathered a broad coalition of agencies responsible for the nation’s safety, security, and environmental protection at sea.

Participating agencies included:

  • Department of Transportation (DOTr)

  • Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA)

  • Philippine Coast Guard (PCG)

  • Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) & Cebu Port Authority (CPA)

  • Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA)

  • National Telecommunications Commission (NTC)

  • National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA)

  • Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA)

The successful conclusion of this workshop reaffirms the Philippines’ position as a responsible maritime nation. By rigorously evaluating the CAP, the Philippines ensures that its maritime administration is not only compliant with today’s regulations but is also resilient enough to meet future global challenges.

Through sustained collaboration and transparency, the Philippine government remains dedicated to upholding its international obligations and ensuring the safety and efficiency of the maritime industry.
