BYD PH chief says charging infrastructure is its biggest risk

Adam Hu, country head of BYD Philippines, said the charging infrastructure remains the company’s biggest risk in the country, noting that the rollout of charging stations is not keeping pace with the strong growth of new energy vehicles (NEVs).

“Personally, I felt the biggest risk is from the charging infrastructure because with the population of the new energy vehicle growing faster, than the chargers,” Hu said during a media roundtable ahead of the official launch of DENZA, its premium and luxury brand, and the introduction of the all-new DENZA D9 on Friday, February 27.

Hu noted that customers without a home charger would need to charge their vehicles outside, but public charging points remain limited. “So I think that is a major risk for us to achieve our performance this year,” he said.

Given the growth rate of the BYD Group in the Philippines, Hu estimated that the number of charging stations needs to double. Based on data from the Department of Energy, a total of 234 charging facilities have been accredited nationwide.

In 2025, BYD sold more than 26,000 units, up from 5,000 units in 2024. This year, Hu said the company is targeting higher sales for BYD models, with additional contributions expected from DENZA vehicles.

Some local companies, including Ayala and SM, are expanding charging infrastructure. AC Mobility is also targeting a total of 700 charging facilities by the end of the year. To date, BYD has established 79 dealerships across the country.

While the Chinese carmaker has no plans to build its own charging stations, Hu said the company is open to becoming a technology partner for private groups interested in investing in charging infrastructure by providing its competitive charging products and technology.

“We are willing to provide the products or the technologies, and the local companies, they can contribute their own strengths as well,” he said.
