From “Mt. Kamuning” to modern mobility: New accessible footbridge opens at EDSA-Kamuning

The era of the “stairway to heaven” at EDSA-Kamuning has officially come to an end. Under the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., the newly rehabilitated Kamuning footbridge is now open, offering a safer, inclusive, and more dignified commuting experience for thousands of Filipinos.

Formerly dubbed “Mt. Kamuning” by the commuting public due to its grueling height and steep design, the old structure lacked direct access to the EDSA Busway. The revamped infrastructure addresses these pain points through a complete design overhaul centered on universal accessibility.

The transformation focuses on moving people, not just vehicles, with several high-impact upgrades:

  • Universal Access: The installation of a dedicated elevator and wheelchair lift ensures that Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), senior citizens, and pregnant women can navigate the station without barriers.

  • Direct Connectivity: Commuters no longer need to navigate circuitous routes; the bridge now features direct access to the Kamuning Busway Station.

  • Enhanced Facilities: The renovation includes expanded platforms, robust waiting sheds, bright LED lighting for nighttime safety, and clear wayfinding signage.

By eliminating the physical hurdles of the previous design, the government expects a significant shift in commuter behavior. Daily ridership at the Kamuning Station is projected to jump from its previous average of 3,000–5,000 passengers to 8,000 passengers per day.

“This project isn’t just about steel and concrete; it’s about respect for the commuter’s time and physical well-being,” the administration noted. “We are turning ‘Mt. Kamuning’ into a symbol of modern, accessible Philippine infrastructure.”

The completion of the Kamuning footbridge marks a pivotal step in the ongoing mission to modernize EDSA and provide a world-class public transport experience for the everyday worker.
