DTI bolsters ASEAN 2026 agenda with strategic focus on MSME growth and regional integration

Building on a momentum of regional cooperation, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has intensified its strategic preparations for the Philippines’ upcoming ASEAN agenda.

In a high-level briefing held recently, DTI officials convened to refine the nation’s Priority Economic Deliverables (PEDs), placing Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) at the heart of the regional economic strategy.

The discussions focused on ensuring that the Philippines leads with a cohesive vision that champions innovation, digital transformation, and inclusive growth across the ASEAN landscape.

Recognizing that MSMEs constitute the backbone of the ASEAN economy, the DTI is prioritizing initiatives that lower barriers to entry and enhance market access. Key highlights of the preparatory meeting included:

  • Priority Economic Deliverables (PEDs): Officials conducted a comprehensive review of proposed deliverables to ensure they align with the current digital shift and sustainable development goals.

  • ASEAN MSME Summit: Strategic planning is underway to host a summit that facilitates direct B2B networking and explores emerging trends in global value chains.

  • ASEAN Inclusive Business (IB) Forum: The DTI is doubling down on “Inclusive Business” models, encouraging large corporations to integrate MSMEs into their supply chains to foster equitable economic distribution.

  • ACCMSME Meeting Coordination: Alignment on the ASEAN Coordinating Committee on MSME (ACCMSME) mandates to ensure the Philippines remains a proactive leader in policy advocacy.  “Our commitment to the ASEAN agenda is rooted in the success of our local entrepreneurs,” a senior DTI official stated. “By driving competitiveness and fostering a culture of innovation, we aren’t just participating in regional talks—we are architecting a more resilient and integrated economic future for every Filipino MSME.”

The Philippines’ proactive stance underscores its dedication to the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) Blueprint. By streamlining the synergy between the ASEAN MSME Summit and the Inclusive Business Forum, the DTI aims to create a “multiplier effect” that attracts foreign investment while empowering grassroots industries.

These initiatives are designed to ensure that the benefits of regional integration are felt by all sectors, moving beyond high-level policy to tangible market opportunities for small-scale exporters.
