UK and Philippines strengthen strategic ties as Minister Malhotra concludes Manila visit

UK Minister for the Indo-Pacific, Seema Malhotra, concluded a high-level diplomatic visit to Manila this week, marking a significant milestone in the 80-year bilateral relationship between the United Kingdom and the Philippines.

The visit comes at a pivotal moment, coinciding with the 5th anniversary of the UK’s status as an ASEAN Dialogue Partner and the Philippines’ current leadership as the ASEAN Chair.

A central pillar of the visit was the third UK-Philippines Strategic Dialogue, co-chaired by Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Leo Herrera-Lim. The discussions served as a critical review of the Joint Framework on the Enhanced Partnership established in 2025, which prioritizes economic growth, regional security, and climate action.

“We know we are in an increasingly fragmented world where partnerships matter—partnerships based on trust and ambition,” Minister Malhotra stated. “I am incredibly proud of what the UK and Philippines have achieved together and for the opportunity for a renewed focus on our goals of security, prosperity, and climate.”

The Minister’s itinerary spanned several critical sectors of cooperation:

  • Economic Growth: At the UK-Philippines Growth and Investment Partnership event, the Minister engaged with UK experts and local delivery partners to bolster the Philippines’ investment ecosystem and drive sustainable trade.

  • Maritime Security: Minister Malhotra visited the Philippine Coast Guard, reaffirming the UK’s unwavering support for a rules-based international system and maritime stability in the Indo-Pacific.

  • Sustainability: During the Blue Economy Symposium, discussions focused on the joint implementation of the High Seas Treaty to protect marine biodiversity and enhance ocean conservation efforts.

The visit included a series of bilateral meetings with the Secretaries of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Industry, and Finance, as well as the Undersecretary of National Defense. These sessions explored concrete avenues for deepening engagement in sustainable development and defense cooperation.

British Ambassador to the Philippines, Sarah Hulton OBE, noted: “Minister Malhotra’s visit highlights the strength and ambition of our long-standing partnership. From trade and investment to maritime security and protecting our oceans, the UK and the Philippines are working together to deliver real benefits for people in both countries.”

This visit reinforces the UK’s enduring commitment to the Philippines and its broader strategy of building resilient, mutually beneficial partnerships across Southeast Asia.
