SEC champions regional green growth, sets stage for 2026 ASEAN taxonomy implementation

Accelerating the transition from policy frameworks to real-world market impact, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)  convened regional financial leaders to solidify the ASEAN Economic Community Strategic Plan 2026-2030.

As the 2026 Chair of the ASEAN Capital Markets Forum (ACMF), the SEC led a high-level joint meeting of the ACMF and the Working Committee on Capital Market Development (WC-CMD) on February 9 in Bohol. The summit focused on moving beyond theoretical alignment toward the practical adoption of sustainable finance standards across Southeast Asia.

The joint meeting prioritized four critical workstreams designed to integrate the region’s capital markets and bolster its resilience against climate risk:

  • ASEAN Taxonomy Adoption: Streamlining the classification of “green” and “transitional” activities to prevent greenwashing and attract international institutional investors.

  • Unified Disclosure Standards: Harmonizing sustainability reporting requirements to ensure transparency and comparability across ASEAN borders.

  • Sustainable Finance Infrastructure: Enhancing the digital and physical architecture of capital markets to facilitate the seamless flow of ESG-linked assets.

  • Private Sector Integration: Reviewing findings from the Joint Sustainable Finance Working Group (JSFWG)-Industry Advisory Panel to ensure regulatory mandates remain grounded in market realities.

The meeting serves as a follow-up to the ACMF Deputies’ Meeting held on January 29, signaling an aggressive push to turn high-level roadmaps into tangible economic shifts. “This is a particularly opportune moment,” stated SEC Commissioner McJill Bryant T. Fernandez in his opening remarks. “We are building on a momentum where the importance of alignment across our working groups is clear. The priority now is to move from framework-building toward implementation and tangible market impact.”

The Bohol meeting underscores the SEC Philippines’ commitment to positioning the region as a global hub for sustainable investment. By refining the ASEAN Taxonomy and strengthening cross-border infrastructure, the ACMF aims to provide a predictable, standardized environment for issuers and investors alike, directly supporting the long-term goals of the ASEAN Economic Community Strategic Plan 2026-2030.
