DTI convenes logistics summit to shield Philippine supply chains from Middle East volatility

Recognizing the critical need for proactive economic safeguards, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Cris A. Roque convened a high-level consultative meeting with the Supply Chain and Logistics Center (SCLC) and key industry leaders to address emerging geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

The strategic dialogue aimed to map out the potential “ripple effects” on the Philippine economy, specifically focusing on the stability of domestic trade and the cost of essential goods.

As global markets react to developments in the Middle East, the DTI and its private sector partners analyzed three primary pressure points for the Philippine logistics sector:

  • Fuel Volatility: Monitoring the impact of global oil price fluctuations on transport overheads.

  • Shipping Congestion & Costs: Evaluating potential shifts in maritime routes and the subsequent rise in freight rates and insurance surcharges.

  • Operational Continuity: Identifying bottlenecks in the international flow of raw materials and finished products to prevent local inventory shortages.

During the session, industry representatives provided real-time data on current logistics hurdles, offering a “boots-on-the-ground” perspective on how global shipping delays are currently being managed.

Secretary Roque emphasized that the government is not merely observing but is actively collaborating with the private sector to build a “shock-absorbent” supply chain.

“Our goal is to stay ahead of the curve,” said Secretary Roque. “By fostering close coordination between the DTI and our logistics partners, we can develop contingency plans that maintain efficient trade flows and protect Filipino consumers from unnecessary price spikes.”

The DTI reaffirmed its commitment to the following actions:

  1. Strengthening Monitoring: Continuous tracking of logistics costs and supply levels for basic necessities and prime commodities.

  2. Policy Agility: Exploring administrative measures to streamline port operations and reduce domestic logistics bottlenecks.

  3. Ongoing Consultation: Establishing a regular feedback loop with the SCLC to ensure government interventions are data-driven and timely.

The consultation underscores a “Whole-of-Nation” approach to economic resilience, ensuring that Philippine businesses remain competitive and domestic supply chains remain robust despite international uncertainties.
