Malacañang orders government-wide energy austerity measures amid rising oil prices

The Philippine government has implemented sweeping energy austerity measures across all agencies as part of a nationwide effort to curb power and fuel consumption in response to rising global oil prices.

Acting Executive Secretary Ralph Recto announced that compliance with the directive is mandatory for the entire bureaucracy, including government-owned and controlled corporations.

The order, issued by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., signals a decisive shift toward demand-side management, with public offices expected to lead by example in conserving energy.

Authorities have already begun enforcing the policy, deploying energy monitors to inspect more than 1,000 government offices within the first week. These inspections focus on air-conditioning systems, lighting usage, and office equipment operations to ensure strict adherence to the new guidelines.

Under the directive, all government offices are required to significantly reduce electricity consumption. Measures include adjusting air-conditioning settings to more efficient levels and minimizing the use of non-essential lighting and equipment.

Fuel usage is also being tightly regulated. Most government vehicles have been ordered off the roads, with exemptions granted only for units involved in public safety and health services.

Recto emphasized that the measures are designed to achieve immediate and measurable reductions in energy use while reinforcing discipline and accountability within the public sector. He noted that even small adjustments in daily operations could collectively result in substantial energy savings.

The austerity program extends to preparations for the country’s hosting of the ASEAN summits this year. Government agencies have scaled down related activities, reduced expenditures, and eliminated non-essential events as part of a broader push toward efficiency.

“This policy reflects the administration’s commitment to responsible governance,” Recto said. “Public officials must set the standard by demonstrating restraint and accountability as the nation navigates the current energy challenges.”

The government continues to monitor implementation closely and is expected to introduce further measures as needed to ensure sustained energy conservation nationwide.
