The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) is calling on all travelers to strictly adhere to regulations on dangerous goods to ensure safe, secure, and orderly air travel during the upcoming Holy Week (Semana Santa).
This directive aligns with the guidance of Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez, reinforcing the government’s commitment to passenger safety during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
Dangerous goods refer to items or substances that can pose risks to aircraft, passengers, and crew when transported by air. These are regulated internationally by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), with certain items permitted only under strict conditions, depending on quantity and airline approval.
Common examples of dangerous goods include:
- Power banks and lithium batteries
- Flammable liquids such as gasoline and paint thinner
- Compressed gases, including aerosols and butane
- Corrosive substances like acids and bleach
- Explosives, including fireworks
CAAP emphasized that non-compliance with these regulations can lead to serious safety risks, including onboard fires or explosions, emergency landings, and significant flight disruptions such as delays or cancellations.
CAAP Director General Raul Del Rosario underscored the importance of vigilance among travelers: “The safety of our passengers and flight personnel remains CAAP’s top priority. Strict adherence to dangerous goods regulations is essential to prevent incidents that could compromise the safety of any flight.”
Passengers found carrying prohibited or undeclared dangerous goods during check-in or prior to boarding may face the following consequences:
- Confiscation of prohibited items
- Offloading from the flight
- Delays in departure
- Possible cancellation of travel
- Fines or legal action in cases of serious or intentional violations
CAAP further warned that intentional concealment or failure to declare restricted items may result in penalties under existing aviation and security laws.
To ensure a smooth travel experience, passengers are strongly advised to:
- Review airline-specific baggage policies before departure
- Place power banks and spare lithium batteries in carry-on baggage only
- Declare all items accurately and avoid bringing prohibited goods
- Fully cooperate with airport security screening procedures
Travelers are also encouraged to arrive at the airport early to allow ample time for security checks and to consult their respective airlines if they have any questions regarding restricted items.
CAAP reiterates that safety is a shared responsibility and urges the public to remain informed and compliant for a safe and peaceful Semana Santa journey.
