The Department of Foreign Affairs today announced that Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro held a highly productive and constructive telephone conversation with the Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, His Excellency Seyed Abbas Araghchi, underscoring both countries’ shared commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and advancing cooperation across multiple sectors.
During the call, Minister Araghchi conveyed Iran’s firm assurance that Philippine-flagged vessels, energy shipments, and Filipino seafarers will be granted safe, unhindered, and expeditious passage through the Strait of Hormuz. This vital maritime corridor remains a critical artery for global energy trade, and Iran’s commitment represents a significant step toward ensuring stability and security in the region.
Secretary Lazaro welcomed this assurance, emphasizing its importance to the Philippines. She noted that the safety and welfare of Filipino seafarers—who play a crucial role in global maritime operations—remain a top priority for the Philippine government. The guarantee of secure passage not only safeguards these workers but also reinforces confidence in international shipping routes.
The Secretary further highlighted the broader economic implications of this development. As the Philippines relies heavily on energy imports from the Middle East, the assurance from Iran will help ensure the steady and reliable flow of essential resources, including oil and fertilizer. This, in turn, supports national energy security, economic stability, and food supply resilience.
Both sides also exchanged views on regional developments and reaffirmed the importance of diplomacy, mutual respect, and open communication in addressing shared challenges. The conversation concluded on a positive note, with both Secretary Lazaro and Minister Araghchi expressing their commitment to maintaining strong bilateral ties and workingcollaboratively toward lasting peace and stability in the region.
The Department of Foreign Affairs remains committed to engaging international partners in promoting the welfare of Filipino nationals abroad and advancing the Philippines’ strategic interests through dialogue and cooperation.
