Following a directive from President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. to prioritize passenger welfare, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) has ordered an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the ceiling collapse at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 arrival extension area earlier today.
Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez has instructed the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) to coordinate closely with the airport’s private operator, New NAIA Infra Corp (NNIC), to determine the root cause of the incident and ensure the structural integrity of the facility.
Key Details of the Incident:
-
Location: Arrival Extension Area, NAIA Terminal 1.
-
Casualties: Initial reports from NNIC confirm that seven (7) individuals sustained injuries.
-
Response: All affected individuals received immediate medical assistance on-site.
-
Operational Status: As of this writing, flight operations at NAIA Terminal 1 remain normal and unaffected. “The safety and security of our passengers and airport personnel are non-negotiable,” said Secretary Lopez. “We have demanded a detailed report from both MIAA and NNIC to explain how this occurred and to ensure that corrective measures are implemented immediately to prevent any future recurrence.”
The DOTr is actively monitoring the situation. NNIC has been tasked with conducting a full-scale assessment of the Terminal 1 infrastructure. The department assures the public that it will remain transparent as the investigation unfolds and will continue to enforce strict safety standards across all national gateways.
