Transportation Sec. Lopez strengthens airport security oversight and personnel integrity

Following a direct mandate from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to ensure honest and transparent service in the nation’s gateways, Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez has announced a dual-front intensification of airport protocols.

The DOTr is moving to tighten both the inspection of passenger luggage and the internal monitoring of Office for Transportation Security (OTS) personnel.

The move comes ahead of an expected surge in passenger volume as travelers return from provinces and international locations. Secretary Lopez emphasized that while the primary role of Security Screening Officers (SSOs) is to maintain safety and intercept contraband, their conduct must remain beyond reproach.

Secretary Lopez issued a stern warning to airport staff, making it clear that those entrusted with public safety are not above the law.

“If it is proven that OTS Security Screening Officers are the leaders in violating the law—including the theft of passengers’ belongings or money—you will be held accountable. We will ensure the perpetrators are punished to the fullest extent,” Secretary Lopez stated.

In a swift response to recent allegations of misconduct, the Secretary confirmed the relief of two Security Screening Officers and one supervisor at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3.

The personnel are currently under investigation regarding the reported theft of ₱7,000 and NTD 1,000 from an Australian national. The individuals involved are facing both criminal and administrative charges as the Department reinforces its commitment to weeding out “scalawags” in uniform.

To ensure a seamless and secure travel experience, the Department of Transportation advises passengers to:

  • Report Misconduct: Passengers are encouraged to immediately report any suspicious activity or wrongdoing by airport personnel to the proper authorities.

  • Compliance with Regulations: To avoid the necessity of manual luggage inspections, travelers are reminded to refrain from carrying prohibited items.

  • Stay Vigilant: Maintaining awareness of one’s surroundings and belongings contributes to the overall safety of the airport environment.

The Office for Transportation Security remains dedicated to its mission of safeguarding the flying public while upholding the highest standards of integrity and professional ethics.
