DOE reaffirms commitment to sustainable aviation fuel at landmark 2026 policy workshop

The Department of Energy (DOE), acting in its capacity as Co-Chair of the National Biofuels Board (NBB), has formally reaffirmed its commitment to accelerating the development and adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

This announcement was made during the opening session of the 2026 SAF Policy Development Workshop, a pivotal event aimed at charting the future of the nation’s aviation energy landscape.

Represented by the Renewable Energy Management Bureau (REMB), the DOE highlighted SAF as a cornerstone of the country’s long-term energy strategy.

Beyond its environmental benefits, the DOE emphasized that a robust domestic SAF industry is essential for enhancing national energy security and reducing the volatility associated with dependence on imported fossil fuels.

“The transition to Sustainable Aviation Fuel is not merely an environmental imperative but a strategic necessity for our energy independence,” the REMB representative stated during the workshop. “By leveraging our local resources and technical expertise, we can insulate our aviation sector from global market shocks while contributing to global decarbonization goals.”

A major outcome of the workshop was the formal establishment of a multi-agency policy working group. This task force is designed to streamline regulatory frameworks and drive priority actions necessary to scale SAF production and logistics. The working group brings together a diverse coalition of public and private stakeholders, including:

  • Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP)
  • Island Skies Alliance
  • Boeing
  • Subic-Clark Alliance for Development
  • National Aviation Academy of the Philippines

The workshop served as a platform to align the interests of aircraft manufacturers, regional development bodies, and educational institutions. By fostering this cross-sector collaboration, the DOE aims to build a viable, end-to-end SAF supply chain that is both economically sustainable and globally competitive.

The 2026 SAF Policy Development Workshop is the first in a series of planned installments intended to finalize a comprehensive national roadmap for aviation biofuels. Future sessions will focus on feedstock sustainability, refining infrastructure, and international certification standards.
