Marcos administration accelerates renewable energy shift amid global supply volatility

Reaffirming the nation’s commitment to energy security and sustainability, the administration of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is intensifying the expansion of renewable energy sources to insulate the Philippine economy from global supply disruptions caused by the ongoing Middle East conflict.

In a Palace press briefing held Monday, Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro emphasized that diversifying the country’s energy portfolio has become a top priority. The shift toward “cleaner” power is a direct response to the vulnerability of the Philippines as a net importer of petroleum products.

The move follows the recent signing of Executive Order 110, which declared a state of national energy emergency. The directive acknowledges that the volatility in the Middle East poses a significant threat to global oil production and transportation, directly impacting the stability of the local energy supply.

“These strategies have been under discussion for some time, particularly since the onset of the Middle East conflict,” Undersecretary Castro stated. “Department of Energy Secretary Sharon Garin has underscored that we must expand and strengthen our renewable energy sector—this is a primary focus of the government.”

Key policy highlights
  • Renewable Energy Priority: The administration is fast-tracking long-term plans to harness solar, wind, and hydrothermal power to reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels.

  • Stability Measures: Under EO 110, the government is empowered to implement emergency measures to ensure the availability and affordability of power for Filipino consumers.

  • Nuclear Energy Status: While various alternatives are being explored, the PCO confirmed that the use of nuclear energy has not yet been integrated into the current emergency discussions.

The Marcos administration remains steadfast in its goal of achieving a sustainable energy future, viewing the current global challenges as a catalyst for a more resilient and self-sufficient Philippine power grid.
