Pres. Marcos Jr. set for historic state visit to Japan, summit to focus on defence, energy, and economic ties

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and First Lady Louise Araneta-Marcos will embark on a historic four-day State Visit to Japan from May 26 to 29, underscoring a pivotal moment in bilateral relations as the two nations celebrate the 70th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic ties.

The visit comes at the official invitation of the Japanese government.

At the core of the State Visit is a bilateral summit meeting between President Marcos and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) announced on Monday that the discussions will focus heavily on defense and security, maritime cooperation, energy resilience, and economic partnerships.

DFA Spokesperson Analyn Ratonel emphasized the strategic importance of the trip during a Palace briefing: “This visit is highly significant as it provides an opportunity for President Marcos Jr. and Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to discuss cooperation in security, maritime and defense, the economy, energy resilience and decarbonization, as well as emerging and future-oriented sectors.”

The two leaders are also expected to exchange views on pressing regional and global challenges, including Indo-Pacific security, ASEAN cooperation, and geopolitical developments in the Middle East.

The summit is anticipated to yield several high-impact bilateral agreements aimed at deepening the strategic partnership between Manila and Tokyo. Key areas of cooperation include:

  • Defense & Maritime Security: Strengthening joint capabilities and strategic coordination in the Indo-Pacific.

  • Trade & Investment: Securing commitments for economic growth, infrastructure development, and clean energy transition.

  • Human Resources: Enhancing labor cooperation and emerging sector talent exchanges.

Beyond government-to-government meetings, President Marcos is scheduled to pitch the Philippines as a prime investment destination during high-level roundtables with Japanese business leaders. He will also dedicate time to engage with members of the Filipino community living in Japan.

In a demonstration of the deep cultural respect and friendship between the two nations, President Marcos and the First Lady will be received by Their Majesties, the Emperor and Empress, at the Imperial Palace.

The formal itinerary includes an official welcome ceremony, a state call, and a prestigious state banquet hosted in the President’s honor. During the audience, the Imperial Couple and the First Couple will mutually confer and exchange state decorations, symbolizing seven decades of enduring diplomatic harmony.
