Gemini Cooperation, a groundbreaking long-term operational partnership between Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk, an A.P. Moller-Maersk company, launches today, February 1, 2025. This ambitious collaboration aims to deliver a fast, flexible, and interconnected ocean network with industry-leading reliability exceeding 90% once fully implemented. By June 2025, all vessels are expected to adhere to the new schedule.
The Gemini Cooperation will span seven trades and offer 57 services, including mainliner and dedicated shuttle services, complemented by feeder services. The partnership’s fleet will consist of approximately 340 modern and efficient vessels, many of which are ready to adopt cleaner fuels, with a total standing capacity of around 3.7 million TEU.
“Launching the new network is a great opportunity for all of us. With our targeted schedule reliability, we will satisfy one of our customer’s most important needs even better and set a new quality standard in the industry,” explains Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd. “Together with our operating partner Maersk, we are focused on delivering on our 90% schedule reliability promise.”
The Gemini network will also set new industry standards in terms of sustainability and advance the companies’ ongoing decarbonization efforts. “Thanks to our effective hub & spoke operating system, we can deploy larger vessels and thus simultaneously optimize speed, reduce idling times, and cut down on carbon emissions. All of this saves our customers a lot of time and resources,” Habben Jansen adds.
As announced in October 2024, the Gemini network will re-route via the Cape of Good Hope. The partners will continue to closely monitor and analyze the latest developments and their impact on the security situation in the Red Sea, returning to the Red Sea only once it is safe to do so.
With a fleet of 292 modern container ships and a total transport capacity of 2.3 million TEU, Hapag-Lloyd is one of the world’s leading liner shipping companies. In the Liner Shipping segment, the company has around 13,700 employees and 399 offices in 139 countries.
Hapag-Lloyd boasts a container capacity of 3.4 million TEU, including one of the largest and most modern fleets of reefer containers. A total of 113 liner services worldwide ensure fast and reliable connections between more than 600 ports on all continents.
