Cebu Pacific honored as textile champion for promoting Filipino weaving traditions

Cebu Pacific Air, the Philippines’ foremost airline, has been celebrated as a Textile Champion by the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI). This accolade acknowledges the airline’s commitment to promoting indigenous weaving traditions through its travel and tourism initiatives.

The distinction was awarded during the National Textile Convention (TelaCon) for Cebu Pacific’s innovative “Discover PH QR Flight Codes” campaign. This remarkable initiative ingeniously integrated traditional weaving patterns into functional QR codes, offering travelers a digital gateway to the stories behind these indigenous textiles. The campaign featured Binakol from Ilocos Norte, Ramit from Occidental Mindoro, Hablon from Iloilo, Patadyong from Antique, and Yakan from Zamboanga.

Candice Iyog, CEB’s Chief Marketing and Customer Experience Officer, expressed the airline’s dedication to cultural preservation: “As an airline that bridges people and places, we see it as part of our mission to not only carry travelers to their destinations but also immerse them in the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines. Supporting local artisans allows us to preserve their craft while encouraging deeper cultural appreciation.”

At TelaCon, CEB and DOST-PTRI also announced a partnership aimed at further promoting local weaving and developing initiatives to support textile communities. DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. highlighted the significance of such collaborations in fostering sustainability: “Over the past two days at TelaCon, we discussed our shared responsibility in moving towards sustainable systems and a circular economy. With dedication, we can lead this transformation—reducing resource intensity and strengthening a value chain that benefits all, bridging economic and social divides.”

With a network spanning 37 domestic and 26 international destinations, Cebu Pacific continues to weave Filipino culture into its brand, bolstering its role in both tourism growth and cultural preservation.
