American Airlines maintains global leadership in flight frequencies

According to the latest data from aviation analytics firm OAG, American Airlines continues to hold its position as the world’s largest airline by flight frequency, operating 197,700 flights this month, 39,400 more than second-ranked Delta Air Lines.

United Airlines leads in year-over-year growth, adding 11,900 more flights compared to June 2024, while American Airlines follows with an increase of 10,000 flights. IndiGo remains the fastest-growing carrier by percentage, expanding operations by 9.3% year-over-year.

While most of the world’s top airlines report positive growth, four carriers in the Top 20 have seen a decline in frequencies this month:

  • Southwest Airlines: -1.3%
  • Aeroflot: -1.8%
  • JetBlue: -3.8%
  • Lufthansa: -4.7%

USA Holds Top Spot in Domestic Aviation Market

The United States remains the world’s largest domestic aviation market, offering 92.7 million seats in June 2025—a lead of over 23.7 million seats compared to China, which holds second place with 68.9 million seats.

Among the Top 10 domestic markets, Brazil shows the highest growth rate, up 9.7% year-over-year. India follows, with domestic capacity increasing 7.4%. On the other hand, Indonesia experiences the sharpest decline at -6.3%, continuing a downward trend for the fourth consecutive month. Japan also reports a slight decrease at -0.9%.

Global Airline Capacity on the Rise

OAG projects global seat capacity in June 2025 will reach 523.7 million, reflecting a 3% increase over June 2024, or an additional 17.2 million seats.

Regionally:

  • Western Europe is the largest market this month with 117.7 million seats, narrowly surpassing North America with 117.1 million.
  • North East Asia leads in absolute growth, adding 3.7 million seats year-over-year for a total of 109.5 million.
  • Central Asia and Lower South America post the highest growth rates at 18% and 9%, respectively.
  • Central/Western Africa is the only region showing a capacity decline, down 3%, continuing its downward trend from the previous month.

These figures reflect an industry steadily recovering and growing, with key regions and carriers adapting dynamically to demand shifts and market trends.
