Maersk navigates dynamic Asia-Pacific air freight market with enhanced connectivity

The Asia-Pacific air freight market continues to demonstrate resilience amidst shifting regional volumes, policy uncertainties, and evolving global supply chain dynamics, according to Maersk.

Maersk noted that despite soft export demand from Greater China, other regions, such as Northeast Asia and the Mekong, have shown rising volumes, driven by diversified sourcing strategies. Available air cargo capacity across the region remains sufficient to meet current demand.

According to the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA), air cargo demand in Asia-Pacific saw a robust 4.9% year-on-year increase in April, outstripping capacity growth and elevating load factors to 61.5%. This regional performance aligns with global trends, with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) reporting a 5.8% year-on-year increase globally, supported by seasonal demand and proactive shipping efforts to mitigate potential tariff impacts.

The macro environment is significantly influenced by the ongoing US-China tariff suspension. While this temporary pause and reduction have led to a rebound in volumes, the future of these measures remains uncertain, prompting airlines and shippers to closely monitor developments. Geopolitical tensions, particularly the Middle East conflict, continue to be a concern for Asia-Europe routes, where potential flight diversions or cancellations could strain capacity. Additionally, regional flashpoints, such as the Cambodia-Thailand border tension, have led to reduced operational hours, with potential, albeit currently limited, impacts on cross-border trucking and transit times into Thailand if escalated.

In response to these dynamic market conditions, Maersk is reinforcing its commitment to enhanced connectivity and operational agility. The company has recently launched twice-weekly air freight services between Hangzhou (HGH), China, and Santiago (SCL), Chile, significantly strengthening vital trade links between Greater China and Latin American markets. Maersk has also successfully demonstrated its cold-chain air logistics capabilities through the efficient shipment of temperature-sensitive perishable cargo, including salmon from Billund (BLL), Denmark, to Hangzhou.

Maersk continues to collaborate closely with its airline partners and leverage its Own Controlled Flight Operations (OCFO) to ensure optimal uplift capacity is secured across strategic corridors. Proactive engagement with customers remains a priority, enabling the joint development of tailored air freight solutions that address individual needs.

“Our teams are dedicated to working hand-in-hand with our airline partners and customers to secure the right uplift across strategic corridors,” stated Maersk. “With continued uncertainty surrounding the US-China tariff outlook and geopolitical risks in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, early planning and clear visibility are more crucial than ever to minimize rate exposure and protect lead times for our clients.”

Maersk is closely monitoring capacity and market conditions, actively preparing for a potential demand uptick in the fourth quarter, should macroeconomic conditions or policy shifts trigger a renewed shipping surge.
