PH automobile sales post flat growth in first half of 2025

Domestic sales of automobiles in the first half of 2025 registered a flat 2 percent growth, pulled down by a sharp decline in the passenger car segment, while the commercial vehicle segment boosted the industry’s performance to account for over 80 percent share of total sales, a joint report by the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, Inc. (CAMPI) and the Truck Manufacturers Association (TMA) showed.

The report showed that total carsales in the first half this year reached 230,912 units or a measly 2 percent growth from 226,279 units in the same January-June period last year.

The flat performance was largely due to the 23.8 percent decline in passenger cars to 45,647 units from 59,875 units in the same period last year.

Meantime, the commercial vehicle segment continued to boost sales with 11.3 percent increase to 185,265 units sold from 166,404 units in the first half of 2024. This segment accounted for the bulk or 80.23 percent of total sales, while passenger cars account for 19.77 percent only.

In terms of categories under the commercial vehicle segment, only the medium-duty trucks and buses (category 4) declined to 13.6 percent with sales of 1,717 units only from 1,987 in the same period last year.

All the other categories posted positive led by the light commercial vehicle (category 2), which grew 14 percent to 138,865 units from 121,760 units. Asian utility vehicles improved its sales by 3.4 percent to 40,788 units; light duty trucks and buses (category 3) grew by 15.3 percent to 3,341 units; and heavy-duty trucks and buses (category 5) sales jumped by 72 percent to 554 units rom 322 in the first semester last year.

In June 2025, total monthly sales hit 40,483 units, the industry still posted a flat 3.6 percent increase year-on-year and 1.8 percent higher than May 2025. While passenger car sales reached 6,922 units, ongoing market shifts and evolving buyer preferences present opportunities for innovation and recovery in this segment.

Notably, total sales of electric vehicles now hit 13,490 units, accounting for 5.84 percent share of total carsales. Share of hybrid EVs account for 80.73 percent, battery EVs with 18.08 percent share, and plug-in hybrid EVs with 1.19 percent.

CAMPI President Rommel Gutierrez said that as the industry heads into the second half of the year, manufacturers and dealers remain focused on enhancing customer experience, introducing updated vehicle lineups, and supporting market recovery across all segments—including passenger cars.

Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation remained the dominant market player with 48.19 percent share, followed by Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation with 19.06 percent, Nissan Philippines, Inc. with 5.14 percent, Ford Group Philippines with 4.47 percent and Suzuki Philippines, Inc. at 4.45 percent, share.
