BOC-NAIA intercepts $537,000 worth of rare agarwood

The Bureau of Customs – Ninoy Aquino International Airport (BOC-NAIA) announced the seizure of a significant outbound cargo containing rare and highly valued agarwood. The estimated value of the confiscated wood is approximately ₱31.65 million (around USD 537,000). The operation, conducted on July 30, 2025, at a Pasay City warehouse, highlights the BOC’s ongoing efforts to combat illegal wildlife trade and enforce environmental protection laws.

Acting on intelligence, BOC officers examined a shipment falsely declared as “Mahogany Wood Hand Curving Design” and “Pack of Dried Sibukaw Woodsticks.” The inspection revealed the true contents to be agarwood, a prized commodity known for its use in perfumes, traditional medicine, and luxury goods. Its scarcity and high demand make it a target for illegal trade.

The attempted exportation is a clear violation of several Philippine laws, including the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA), Presidential Decree No. 705 (the Forestry Reform Code), and Republic Act No. 9147 (the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act).

“This interception underscores our firm commitment to strictly enforce environmental and customs laws in close coordination with our partner agencies,” said BOC Commissioner Ariel F. Nepomuceno. “Protecting the country’s biodiversity is a shared responsibility, and the Bureau of Customs will remain vigilant against any attempt to exploit our natural resources.”

The operation was carried out with support from the Environmental Protection Compliance Division (EPCD) under the BOC Enforcement Group. The seized agarwood will be turned over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for proper handling and disposition.

BOC-NAIA District Collector Alexandra Y. Lumontad emphasized the port’s critical role in protecting the nation’s natural heritage, reaffirming its dedication to enhanced border security against environmental crimes.
