DMW reminds Filipino workers abroad to follow host country laws

Following the recent arrest of six Filipino nationals in a Hong Kong dental clinic raid, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) is reminding all overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to strictly adhere to the laws and regulations of their host countries.

The six individuals were reportedly performing unauthorized work that was not covered by their employment visas—an act considered illegal under Hong Kong law. DMW Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac emphasized the importance of staying within the bounds of employment contracts and visa conditions.

“We understand the emotional and financial pressures many of our OFWs face abroad,” said Secretary Cacdac. “But this incident serves as a serious warning: stay within the bounds of your employment contracts and visa conditions. If your visa specifies a particular job, you must stick to it. Anything outside of that is a violation and could lead to arrest, detention, or even deportation.”

Secretary Cacdac reiterated that these enforcement measures are not acts of discrimination against Filipinos but are legal actions applied to all foreign nationals. As guests in other countries, OFWs are expected to respect and comply with local laws.

The DMW is working to provide continuous assistance and support to the detained individuals. “We are closely coordinating with the Philippine Consulate, our Migrant Workers Office in Hong Kong, and the Welfare Office to ensure the legal and welfare needs of the detained Filipinos are fully addressed,” said Secretary Cacdac. “We will provide a competent legal defense and ensure their rights are protected throughout the process.”

The Secretary also urged all OFWs to stay focused on their approved employment and avoid being lured into unauthorized side jobs, which could jeopardize their legal status and future.
