Car sales decline in August; vehicle categories down except AUV

Except for the Asian utility vehicle (AUV) category, all other vehicle categories suffered lower sales in August compared to the previous month, July, data from the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc. (CAMPI) and Truck Manufacturers Association (TMA) showed.

Based on the official data, motor vehicle sales in August declined by 5.5 percent to 36,174 units from 38,295 units in July. The weak sales performance in August has brought the January-August total sales to 305,381 units, just a measly 0.2 percent increase from 304,764 units in the same period last year.

For the August versus July sales performance, the CAMPI-TMA data showed that passenger car sales dropped by 5.51 percent while commercial vehicle sales also declined by 5.3 percent.

In terms of vehicle categories, only the AUV registered a modest 2.6 percent increase in sales while the rest posted negative led by the heavy-duty trucks and buses with 27.8 percent decrease.

Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation remains the dominant market player with 47.93 percent share, followed by Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation with 18.96 percent, Nissan Philippines, Inc. with 4.96  percent, Ford Group Philippines with 4.89 percent and Suzuki Philippines, Inc. at 4.75 percent.
