The Management Association of the Philippines (MAP) has selected Hans T. Sy, Executive Committee Chairman of SM Prime Holdings (SM Prime), as its 2025 Management Person of the Year. The prestigious award recognizes outstanding individuals from the business or public sector who have demonstrated exemplary management excellence and made significant contributions to national development.
A Visionary Leader Focused on National Impact
Mr. Sy is being honored for his instrumental role in propelling SM Prime into one of Southeast Asia’s leading integrated property developers. He served as President of SM Prime from 2004 to 2016, spearheading its expansive growth across the Philippines and China, and diversifying its portfolio of malls, residences, offices, hotels, and leisure properties.
However, the core of this recognition lies in his pioneering vision for sustainable and resilient development. Under his leadership, SM Prime established itself as a benchmark in the industry by integrating ESG+R (environmental stewardship, social inclusion, good governance, and resilience) principles into all aspects of the company’s master planning and operations.
“I have never seen myself as someone deserving of awards or recognition. I try to do my part. What matters most to me is using what we build to make a difference in our country,” said Sy. “At SM, it has long been our responsibility to create spaces that protect people, support communities, and help Filipinos stand stronger for the future.”
Championing Resilience and Sustainability
Mr. Sy’s commitment to resilience saw the company champion innovations well ahead of industry standards, including:
Elevated Structures and Flood-Resilient Design across the expanding network of SM malls.
The implementation of Solar Power Generation and Water Recycling Systems.
This strategic approach transformed ESG+R into both a growth driver and an efficiency enabler, solidifying SM Prime’s role as a pioneer in resilient urban development.
Beyond SM Prime: A Commitment to Public Service
Mr. Sy’s influence extends beyond SM Prime. He holds several key leadership positions, including Adviser to the Board of SM Investments Corporation, Chairman of China Banking Corporation, and Chairman of National University.
Internationally, he was appointed as the first Filipino to the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) ARISE International Board. He is also the co-founder and current Chairman of the ARISE Philippines Network, established in 2015, furthering his advocacy for disaster risk reduction and community resilience on a national scale.
