Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac met with H.E. Ioannis Pediotis, Ambassador of Greece to the Philippines, during a courtesy visit at the DMW Central Office yesterday, to reaffirm their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation for Filipino seafarers.
The high-level discussion focused on critical areas of mutual interest, including maritime safety, enhanced crew welfare, and effective risk mitigation strategies crucial for Filipino workers serving aboard Greek-owned vessels. Greece is one of the world’s largest ship-owning nations and a principal employer of Filipino seafarers, making this partnership vital to the global maritime industry.
Secretary Cacdac underscored the DMW’s proactive stance in ensuring the protection of its workers. “This meeting solidifies our mutual dedication to securing the welfare of our Filipino seafarers, who are the backbone of the global maritime industry,” said Secretary Cacdac. “We are committed to continuous, open dialogue with our Greek partners to ensure the safest possible working environment and uphold their rights.”
Both officials agreed to immediately explore mechanisms for open dialogue with Greek shipowners and maritime stakeholders. The objective is to establish clearer protocols and policies that will significantly enhance the protection, well-being, and professional development of Filipino seafarers.
Joining Secretary Cacdac were Undersecretaries Bernard Olalia, Dominique Tutay, and Jainal Rasul, Jr., along with Assistant Secretaries Jerome Pampolina and Levinson Alcantara, and Director Augusto Sandiego III.
