Pres. Marcos Jr. urges APEC to advance growth, inclusivity, and sustainability amid global challenges

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. called on the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) member economies on Friday to stay responsive, dynamic, and forward-looking, prioritizing collective action on growth, inclusivity, and sustainability as they navigate complex global challenges.

The President delivered his message during his intervention at the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting informal dialogue with guests at the Hwabaek International Convention Center (HICO) in Gyeongju, Republic of Korea, where the 32nd APEC meeting is being held under the theme, “Building a Sustainable Tomorrow.”

“We face challenges now that may not have been contemplated or foreseen when our rules-based system was conceptualized—thus, the need for us to be responsive, dynamic, and forward-looking,” President Marcos stated. “As we grapple to address these challenges, let us not lose sight of our objectives to bring growth, inclusivity, and sustainability to our region, as well as the core principles of openness, non-discrimination, and transparency.”

President Marcos outlined several key areas for regional economic cooperation:

  • Trade Governance: He urged member economies to prioritize the full restoration of the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) dispute settlement mechanism and Appellate Body.
  • Digital Economy: He called for support in developing new disciplines that enhance trade in the digital era and foster an environment conducive to business, emphasizing that digital transformation and the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) must contribute to inclusive and equitable growth.
  • Sustainability and Food Security: The President pressed for advancing the global sustainability agenda, strengthening food security, and concluding negotiations on the Fisheries Subsidies Agreement.
  • Supply Chains: To further strengthen regional connectivity, President Marcos stressed the importance of building smarter and more sustainable supply chains through regulatory reforms, digitalization, and skills development.

The President emphasized that APEC must ultimately preserve its strength and relevance by bridging differences, enhancing capacities, and fostering mutual trust among its members. He underscored the Philippines’ readiness to work with all APEC partners to uphold an open, connected, and future-ready region to maintain resiliency and attain shared prosperity.

President Marcos arrived in the Republic of Korea on Thursday to attend the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting and engage with top business executives, investors, and the Filipino community.
