PPA marks World Education Day by turning ports into learning hubs for Filipino youth

In celebration of World Education Day, the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) is championing a classroom without walls, highlighting its nationwide Port Educational Tour program as a vital tool for experiential learning and national development.

The PPA is redefining the “port experience,” moving beyond its traditional role as a transit point for cargo and passengers to serve as a dynamic educational laboratory. By opening operational gates to students, the agency aims to bridge the gap between academic theory and the fast-paced reality of the maritime industry.

A Vision for Informed Citizenship PPA General Manager Jay Santiago emphasized that this initiative is a core part of the agency’s commitment to the country’s future.

“Education is a cornerstone of nation-building. By opening our ports to students, we are helping shape informed and future-ready citizens who understand the importance of maritime connectivity to our economy,” said GM Santiago. “This initiative supports the vision of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to build a stronger and more inclusive Philippines.”

From Daycare to Degree Holders Since its advocacy began in 2015, the program has scaled from localized visits in Manila to a comprehensive nationwide campaign. Between 2023 and 2025, Port Management Offices (PMOs) across the archipelago—from Zamboanga and Davao to Panay, Eastern Leyte, and NCR—have hosted tours for a diverse range of learners, including daycare children, senior high schoolers, and college students.

The structured tours provide students with a deep dive into port life, including:

  • Safety & Security Orientations: Learning the rigorous standards of maritime safety.

  • Economic Impact Briefings: Understanding how ports drive trade and environmental protection.

  • Operational Exposure: Guided walkthroughs of passenger terminals and container zones to see logistics in action.

Inspiring the Future Workforce The impact of the program is best reflected in the voices of its participants. For Sario Ligcat, a scholar from Davao, the tour was a catalyst for career ambition: “I am grateful to be part of this tour; it expanded our minds to dream bigger. I realized there are so many opportunities in the port industry.”

Similarly, students like Beverly Mangod and Benjie Pepe noted that the experience deepened their understanding of how ports manage international trade and prevent supply chain delays, ensuring that essential products reach Filipino homes.

A Commitment to Progress The PPA remains dedicated to utilizing its facilities as platforms for professional growth and national pride. By fostering an early interest in maritime, logistics, and engineering, the PPA ensures that the next generation of Filipino professionals is ready to lead the country’s blue economy.
